It would definitely be beneficial to the environment to reintroduce animals we have exterminated in the past, such as wolves, lynx and bears. Without these natural predators to prey on them, the populations of deer would run riot if we did not cull them, which is a far from ideal way of controlling the population. It would be far better to allow populations to stabilise naturally with predator and prey in balance, as would be the case if we humans hadn’t made a mess of things in the first place. We would be rectifying the mistakes of our ancestors. Unfortunately, many people have an irrational fear of large predators, particularly wolves, thanks to fairy-tales and films and the like which portray them as vicious man-killers. In reality, there is no record of a healthy wolf ever killing a human, but it’s difficult to convince people of this when they’ve heard all their lives that wolves will gobble up your grandmother at the first opportunity.
