An absolutely inescapable fact is that given the way our economy works at present, we need immigrants and we need a lot of them. Our economy and labour requirements are growing and we simply don’t have enough workers to fill many thousands of skilled jobs and if the projections coming out of WA and Queensland are anything to go by, we’ll need to greatly increase the numbers we accept over the next few years. Those immigrants will all need to be housed, fed, provided with water and their families will need greatly increased health services, education etc for which we’ll need even more immigrants and so on. Of course, another approach would be to stop digging up our precious and finite resources and selling them at bargain basement prices to other countries. China in particular must be laughing all the way to the bank while they hang onto their massive resources and deplete ours. The Australian economy would slow right down but I’m not sure that would be the universally bad outcome that
