Should american football, be called american rugby?
When the American sport started diverging from English-style rugby in the 1880s, it was called Rugby. “American Rugby Football” to give the full name, just the way in which the English organization still calls itself the “Rugby Football Union”. The name just got shortened in a different way — from American Rugby Football to just ‘Football”. Eventually the shortened version became official.
