Should all ESL/ESD students receive letter grades or percentages in all subject areas?
Teachers should use discretion in assessing ESL/ESD students and reporting achievement. For some ESL/ESD students who have arrived recently and are in the early stages of second language development, it might be inappropriate to assign a letter grade or percentage as there has not been sufficient time for the student to demonstrate his/her learning or for the teacher to collect enough data. In such cases, the ESL teacher could attach an appendix to the report card outlining the student s progress and achievement.
