Should a thread forming or thread cutting self-tapping screw be used?
Thread forming screws are generally used with more ductile materials. Thread forming screws move material rather then remove it. Normally, the softer or more viscoelastic plastics allow their creep characteristic to fill in the threaded areas, making for better screw retention and higher back-out torques. Thread cutting screws are generally recommended for the higher modulus materials such as highly reinforced resins. The softer the material, the more pitch and thread depth is needed to reduce strip out and creep while allowing a significant clamping torque. In addition, the softer the material, the faster the loss of clamping force and torque retention due to the creep phenomenon.
