Boris is being a complete tit as usual. Serves Londoners right for electing an Eton educated pranny with no experience of the real world. An amnesty for illegal immigrants would be in no way morally right, but could be regarded as pragmatic in some ways (i.e. they’re here anyway, so we may as well have them paying taxes instead of working in the black economy). However, if we’re seen to reward illegal immigration, we could end up with even more of them flocking to these shores. There should be no “pathway” to permanent residency or citizenship for ANYONE who came here illegally. Making an example of them (rounding them up, locking them up, sending them back) would ultimately act as a deterrent, even if the initial cost of doing that is higher. With their current salary and expenses packages, politicians can afford to insulate themselves from the negative effects of immigration, so they see no problem with pursuing pro-immigration policies.
