First, your questions are not dumb, but very valid and important to know. Q1: Well, I had a friend who produced milk without being pregnant OR nursing a baby. She had an imbalance of a certain hormone (I believe prolactin) and she would, on occasion, leak some milk. This is rare. Typically, there is only SLIGHT milk secretion prior to delivery of a baby, and only in some women (I haven’t had this in 3 pregnancies). After a woman gives birth, her body produces “colustrum” which is less abundant, but a very concentrated, nutrient dense liquid. It is not technically the “milk.” She will not produce milk until about the 3rd day. This is normal. The baby needs both the colostrum AND the milk. We did not use ANY formula or supplements (water, juice, etc) with our last 2 children. Q2: A woman will continue to secrete milk as long as she is feeding her baby.
