Seriously though, wouldn it be madness to locate a Data Centre so close to active volcanoes?
Iceland is not a small island. It is a little bit smaller than England, about the same size as Kentucky. Prospective data centre locations are remote from the active volcanoes – and in addition are upwind of them. It is perhaps best to state the obvious; Icelanders have long since lived with, observed, monitored, analysed, prepared for all forms of seismic activity. Many of the world’s leading experts on volcanic and seismic activity are Icelandic. As a result, Iceland knows where the volcanoes are, can predict where eruptions will be and warn of imminent eruptions. Icelanders are educated on the risk and they prepare for, not react to, eruptions and geological disturbance. In short, Icelanders know where to put Data Centres and know where not to put Data Centres.
