First I’d like to introduce this section by reminding you that “sterilization” is a word with many degrees. You can “sterilize” something with rubbing alcohol, or “sterilize” something by boiling it for an hour… But this will only be a partial sterilization and will not kill all microbes (Hepatitis for example probably would not be killed by these methods and requires something more aggressive). There are bacteria that can live in a vacuum, and others that can live in the exhaust of a rocket, so no matter what method you use, things will be left alive. For example, if you run your tools through a washing machine, you’re probably going to kill AIDS, but not Hepatitis. All of the information presented in this FAQ is also available from other sources.
