Secondly, what type of rock would be a good candidate for curing?

I can get my hands on about 80 pounds of fossilized wood, but I don’t exactly have easy access to pieces of dead coral in the DC area. When I dig around in the woods behind my house, I see a lot of shale/slate material, which I think I would want to avoid. Any advice on where to start looking and what to look for in candidate specimens would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance for your consideration! -DS
