I think that for the most part, the most modern flair of the mainstream horror genre was revitalized, if you will, by countless remakes and sequels, say like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Hills Have Eyes or the now ever growing American adaptation of Japanese horror films like The Grudge or The Ring. Much of these though, gave the ever popular slasher genre a much needed fix up for the turn of the century, because things like Scream or I Know What You Did Last Summer didn’t do much to try to change the formula, (And most were lacking much gore.) at least not enough to even allow innovation, like all those ”multi slashers” of 2000 and so on did, and with the radical changes, even if they’re all remakes, did spawn off new things like the Saw series or Hostel, and these new takes and turns on violence, gore and concept, for now, illuminate the genre.
