SCO UnixWare 7/OpenUNIX 8/OpenServer 6 FAQ : Networking : What is a Packet Filter?

A packet filter is a set of rules that control the movement of data in and out of your ethernet cards. What’s being checked are packets between the Network and Internet layers of the TCP protocol stack. As such, packet filters can restrict which packets are allowed to enter or exit through a nic. Packet filters are not enabled by default, and can be created using the Scoadmin Packet Filter Manager.
