Scientific Notebooks Q. Can Scientific Notebooks be used to document “numerical experiments”, as they can be used to document physical experiments?

There is nothing that limits the use of Scientific Notebooks to “physical experimentation” or precludes their use in documenting “numerical experiments”. Since the use of Scientific Notebooks is the widely accepted way to document research, experimentation, and evaluative work, we encourage the use of Scientific Notebooks in analysis work, particularly in the activities of model development and code evaluation. The information and documentation required by NP 9-1, “Analyses”, that is generated during the work can be captured in a Scientific Notebook. Note, however, that NP 20-2, “Scientific Notebooks”, is written primarily to address data collection; it does not cover key information an analyst should record, so the Scientific Notebook procedure could not be used alone in such a case.
