Run Disk Defragmenter, Gets To 10%, Message Pops Up Saying, Error Occurred In File C:AVG6DB_N.DAT?
It sounds like you had AVG antivirus at some time or other and a data file is seen as hanging around. You have two things to do: Uninstall AVG if you still have it, then clean the registry using Microsoft’s Live OneCare Cleanup Scan, then download and run Auslogics Disk defragger. It’s twice as fast, twice as thorough and safe to use. I’ve used it for nearly two years now. http://www.auslogics.com/disk-defrag/ind… http://onecare.live.com/site/en-US/cente… AVG is really bad about letting the hard disk defrag. It almost always stops it. If you really want to defrag, and everyone needs to, frequently, then either uninstall AVG or disable it.
That file is from you antivirus software – the file is locked which is causing the problem. Only suggestion I would have is to stop your antivirus from running before you do the defrag. If the problem persists perhaps trying to run chkdsk /f (use Start | Run) to ensure there are no errors in that area of the disk first may help.
Sounds like you have errors on your disk. To fix these, Click on Start->Run, type in CMD and press enter. In the black box, type in “chkdsk /F C:” and enter It will tell you it cannot lock the current drive, etc. Just press Y and enter. Reboot your computer. It should do run a chkdsk (blue background) at some point. After it’s done, try a defragment again. Drew S Digital Lifetime Services MCSE, MCSA, A+, Security+ http://dls.freezoka.
One of the limitations of the built in defragger is that it stops or restarts whenever some program writes to disk while its defragging. So its good to turn off your scanner, screensaver etc before defrag. However with an automatic defragger like Diskeeper, you can continue to use the PC even as you defrag. Here is a trial version. http://www.diskeeper.com/defrag.aspx Also run a diskcleanup and chkdsk before defrag.
