ROUGHAGE N’ READY, WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
Roughage N’ Ready describes bulls that are developed using specific guidelines to promote muscle growth and athleticism. 99% of the ration by body weight is roughage. This very high roughage low starch diet consists mainly of WDG, straw or corn stalks and hay with a little silage for moisture. The bulls are targeted to gain 3 pounds per day from weaning to yearling, about 160 days. This rate helps them grow and develop sexually, express their genetic differences and stay athletic. Bulls fed to gain 4 to 5 pounds on a shortened test are developed for marketing purposes not breeding purposes. With EPD’s and Roughage N’ Ready, we don’t need a corn bucket to “find” the good ones. Roughage N’ Ready mimics a grass based diet with plenty of exercise to grow and condition bulls for the big game—breeding season. This system identifies bulls that convert roughage effectively, and those that can’t, so we can eliminate the losers before they get to your pasture.
