My sewing these days is more for very special items, dance costumes, clothes for gandchildren’s dolls, that type of thing, as well as quilting and penny rugs. There was a time when I made all my own clothes. Times were always tough when I was growing up and the cheapest and best way to have good clothes was to make them myself. We had a couple of really cool places to get well-made, inexpensive fabrics, including wool. I cannot imagine trying to make myself a wool dress or suit today with the cost of off the bolt woolens. I used to pay around $5 a yard for wool so that definitely shows my age, and good cottons cost anywhere from 69 cents to $1.00 a yard! Oh my but I feel definitely old. I’m also saddened that in many schools the teaching of basic sewing has gone the way of budget cuts and “out dated” skills. Well, I’m happy to say my boys can hand-sew and do small repairs if necessary (and iron as well) and my daughter while not the sewer I am has taken a definite interest in it. Here’
