We concentrate on what we do best, which is mining – the first stage of the supply chain. Rio Tinto operates or shares in some of the largest deposits in the world. That is partly why we are enjoying financial success at a time of strong prices, although all our product groups generate strong cash flow at all points of the cycle. Large long life deposits also give us the opportunity to increase production in line with demand, a great advantage in the current environment. Ours is a simple strategy and it works. While most of our existing assets are in OECD countries, we are responding to new opportunities in the developing world – Peru, Guinea and Indonesia to name a few – and in countries that are only now opening up to mining investment, like Madagascar, Russia and Mongolia. We are always alert to merger and acquisition opportunities, but growth is often about choosing between buying and building.
