Ricardo Mayorga Vs Antonio Margarito at 147lbs…..Who wins and why?
It would actually be a good fight. You have a brawl between two guys with little to gain and much to lose. Mayorga doesn’t have as much to lose as does Margarito because he just fights. He doesn’t seem to care about the status of his career. He seems to have accepted the role of “opponent”. Mayorga has the tools to outpoint Margarito but he lacks the discipline. He’d go in with the wrong strategy and get knocked out. I’m not sure how Mayorga “earned” a shot at Cotto but it doesn’t take much to get a shot at one of the many titles. You just have to have the right associates, or you can play the role of “useful fodder”, which it seems Mayorga is good at. In this regard, Margarito still has more to lose. Despite his decisive losses to Mosley and Pacquiao, he’s still a dangerous opponent with more to lose than Mayorga has. Ricardo will get another shot somewhere. It doesn’t matter if he loses another 10 in a row. He’s too easy to beat and he provides a good workout. I’d love opponents like
Margarito. He is in much better condition than Mayorga and a better boxer overall. Margarito was able to stand 12 rounds with Pacquiao where most of those 12 rounds Manny came at him with sustained attacks. Mayorga did 11 rounds against Cotto who was mainly looking to counter him and allowed him to clown around and take little breaks during the rounds.
