He was fired partly because the rest of the Apple management did not agree with him and then rehired when they realized that computers have matured to the point where Steve’s vision will be materialized in a few years. What we see in iPod, iPhone and rapid adoption of Macs among consumers and corporate customers alike is the realization of that vision. The techies like myself dismiss beautifully crafted UI as just UI since we are more accustomed to using the oh-so-efficient command line interface, we like to write code and run it through shell scripts, I still come across folks who shun IDEs and instead use Emacs or VI to write their Java code.
