Research in automotive related areas. I know umich is really good in this, but is it very very difficult to find any research work in automotive fields?
It is relatively easy to find support if you are willing to stay for a long enough time (read PhD, or a substantial MS) to be useful to a group. A bulk of the research in the department goes toward automobile industry related things, so the spots must exist. It is a question of whether you will be useful to them.
