Repellent or Waterproof?
Looking for tips on waterproof coatings? Despite what some paint manufacturers might tell you, water-repellent and waterproofing coatings are quite different. A water-repellent coating system is applied to above-grade concrete or masonry. It is not intended to prevent the passage of moisture under hydrostatic pressure and repels water only temporarily. Some repellents form a film, while others prevent moisture movement by filling surface pores to prevent moisture movement. Waterproofing coating systems, on the other hand, will prevent the passage of water under hydrostatic pressure. These film-forming coatings are made for above or below grade and can be applied to interiors or exteriors.
