Registered Childminder – Is it for me?
Registered childminders usually look after children under 12 in the childminder’s own home and often collect school-aged children from a nearby school. They are registered with the Care and Social Services Inspectorate for Wales (CSSIW). A Childminder must pass the CACHE Introducing Childminding Practice (ICP) before registering. They must be at least 18 years of age and each Childminder and members of their household over the age of 16 must undergo a Criminal Records Bureau enhanced disclosure. Childminders are usually registered to care for no more than six under 8’s (including their own children). Following registration every Childminder is inspected bi-annually, to ensure that they and their premises are suitable for childminding. Most registered childminders are members of the National Childminding Association (NCMA), who can offer help, support and guidance on a number of issues including ample training opportunities to further develop your chosen profession.
