Picture of the problem/solution Thanks to a MacFixIt reader who goes by “MDD867,” we’ve got a diagrammed picture of one home-made solution for reducing the noise generated by the Power Mac G4 MDD. • The reader’s solution involves several elements including: • Removing the internal speaker so air supply fans can pull more fresh air • Installing Thermaltake Volcano 5 fans wrapped in neoprene to the front of the power supply • Using a quiet, Enermax UC-112FAB fan model for the heatsink • Using a paperboard spoiler to force more air through the heatsink • Removing the PCI slot covers to increase airflow The best part of MDD867’s solution is that all of the components are completely reversible to their original state – no major rewiring, soldering or other metal work is involved.
