All three of those topics, Iraq, the economy and the optimism of the country in general are at the same time complex issues, and so broad that it’s difficult to pin them down. To give any of those issues a serious answer would take a candidate at least 10 or 15 minutes of solid discussion, backed with examples and complex analysis. The voting public is often more interested in sound bites and taking stands on issues rather than discussing them in depth. The situation in Iraq and the economy both require a fair amount of specialized knowledge to really be able to discuss solutions and methods to reach those solutions. A lot of people have not devoted the time and effort to learn more about the Shia and Sunni Muslim populations, or the difficulties that contractors have faced in rebuilding efforts, or the struggles in turning control of various infrastructure projects over to Iraqi people.
