Quick! Whats a good book to read to my daughters first grade class?
Amelia Bedelia — The adventures of a very literal maid. For instance when she is told to draw the drapes, she sets up an easel and draws a picture of them instead of closing them and when she is told to change the towels she gets out a pair of scissors and cuts them up so they will be changed. The Jolly Postman — This book is fun if you can get ahold of it. The Postman brings letters to various fairy tale and nursery rhyme characters. The letters are separate sheets of paper in envelopes on the appropriate pages.
I have read this book to all my sons, and they really like the silliness that happens in the book. It starts out fairly tame, when a class is going to have a Pet’s Assembly and bring their pets to show the class. Things get really interesting when small, quiet Poonam shows up with six enormous lions! The story is pretty funny (my boys laugh at it a lot) and it is really cool that none of the characters have boring common names like Billy or Susie. Instead we get more interesting names like Gurpal and Ranjeev. It is also neat to see quiet little Poonam laern to speak up in class and be heard by her classmates.
