If you know anything about Thalassemia.. How likely is it for Beta Thalassemia to present itself in patients with no Mediterranean/African/Middle Eastern origin? I also have the Alpha gene as well. I have moderate Thalassemia Intermedia and have required transfusions only twice. I am Russian and Ashkenazi Jew. Therefore, you can see why I find this diagnosis somewhat puzzling.
