Purchasing a Rail Ticket, “few days before” in advance, is it cheaper?

It wouldn’t be any cheaper a few days in advance, no. You’d be able to reserve a seat for no extra charge, though. I always do, those trains get crowded. I’m assuming you’re in the UK.

Some tickets are cheaper if bought in advance. It can also be that there are a limited number of reduced price tickets allocated, and naturally they can sell out earlier. I have found that the best way to find a cheaper ticket is to go to the railway ticket office as soon as possible, and ask the ticket clerk to sort out the best fare for the journey, and it maybe that travelling at a slightly different time to the one you may have originally intended, that a cheaper ticket is available. Face to face dialogue is preferable to web browsing, because one is talking to a professional who understands the system and knows where to find what you need, whilst you, as the customer, can decide how flexible you will be. User accessible websites offer neither of these advantages.
