A nice homey atmosphere that feels good can be created by: Lowering the brightness of overhead florescent lights Use as much natural light as possible Provide soft non-commercial background music at appropriate times Keep the room as neat and clean as possible Use scented air fresheners and candles for a pleasant classroom smell Post an assortment of math (visual content reminders) posters in the classroom. Display important calculations, math words and symbols with their definitions on the board for reference. Provide Math Student Reference Guides at two reading levels for reference, and model how they are used. Ask questions emphasizing connections to the world outside the classroom as well as connections to previous math learning. Allow students who are easily distracted by any noise to use CD/MP3 players with headphones, in my classroom only, to improve focus and attention to task.
