Professional Standards: Is it a good idea to have a website promoting yourself and abilities?

I believe that it is an asset to have something like that as long as it come off as professional and not just a ‘worship me’ page. Make sure that when describing yourself and your skills and talents that everything you say is based on something tangible, so if you are asked to prove it, you can. In other words, if you play guitar, don’t say something like, “I’m so good I make the earth shake.” That is obviously more of a ‘look at me’ statement than it is a real assessment of your abilities. Instead say something like, “I am well versed in standard notation and am an expert with natural harmonics and finger tapping.” That way you can prove it and it sounds more like a professional assessment than just a personal opinion or ego. Be detailed and try your best to be accurate. If anything, it is better to downplay your skills a bit, so when they see you they are more impressed than if you inflate them and can’t reach them.
