Prior to the Great War, Germany was a group of small states. When did they unite, and why?
German stares were united by Otto von Bismark – Prussian Prime Minister – who wanted a strong, unified Germany for the Prussian king, William I. His policy was “Blood and Iron” – only war and not speeches nor representative government could unite Germany. He used the Danish War, Austro-Prussian War / Seven Weeks War, and the Franco-Prussian War to show the German states that Prussia and the German confederation he was forming was strong and that they should unite. They did in 1871 under Kaiser William I.
