Pollution is rampant in the environment, why focus on breast milk?
A. The fact that pollutants end up in our bodies and in our breast milk is a human rights violation against us and our babies. MOMS focuses on breast milk because it provides a snapshot of the body burden of chemicals a fetus is exposed to during pregnancy. This body burden is an indicator of the health of the fetus’ first environment, the womb, and therefore the health of the mother’s surrounding environment. MOMS believes once toxic chemicals are removed from the environment, whether through legislative bans or manufacturing changes due to consumer pressure, the effects will be seen in reduced levels of these chemicals in breast milk.
