They can search the area but a search is not even probability, let alone proof, that it was YOUR group that was doing the drinking. And if the police were really concerned about it, they would have detained you. So, yes, it was just a tactic to get you to disperse. Don’t worry about it.

If you had been drinking they would just give you a ticket. Since you were not then nothing will happen.
