Police Checkpoints in Washington, DC – Are They a Violation of Your Civil Rights? Tuesday June 10, 2008 This past weekend police stopped cars in the Trinidad neighborhood of Northeast Washington to check drivers’ identification and ask whether they have a “legitimate purpose” to be in the area. These police checkpoints were set up to try to stop the gun violence that has recently inundated the neighborhood. The Neighborhood Safety Zone initiative will continue at random hours and could be set up in other neighborhoods around Washington, DC. Leaders of the American Civil Liberties Union believe that the police checkpoints are a violation of our civil rights.
