To put this in the proper perspective, it helps to understand what, exactly, the Academy that Plato set up involved. First of all, there were no major buildings. It was located in a sacred and pretty much public grove. The closest modern analogy is probably a public park. Plato owned a small garden in that area… THIS is his academy (and don’t step on the flowers!). The oldest surviving references we have from the second century AD (a time when the Academy was still in existance) describe only graves, altars, and groves of trees. So there were no students sitting at desks and writing out lessons on pieces of paper. It was just a handy and attractive place for a bunch of like-minded folks to go and chat. And certainly Plato’s Academy were not the only guys to do so… there were still services to Athena and any number of other things going on there for centuries and centuries.
