Pls settle an argument. Why did colonists dress as Mohawk Indians re the Boston Tea party?
The colonists needed a plausible explanation for who dumped the tea into the harbor. If the royal representatives of the British government there in Boston could be certain that the colonists had done the deed, then there could be harsh reprisals. It wasn’t primarily to cover up their identity. If I remember correctly, they did this at night, so they could just have disguised their faces. However, by making it plausible that the colonists weren’t involved, but rather just some “savage” indians, then the American colonists could not be punished.
