USB type “modem” might be a problem. If it has an Ethernet port, life is good. If it does not have an Ethernet port, it may not work for most wireless routers. Typically: You have a standard Cable or DSL “modem”. It is not a modem because it does not MOdulate or DEModulate. The guy at the Best Buy will call it a modem. Your ISP will call it a modem. It’s actually a Cable or DSL to Ethernet bridge. The folks at Sony call it a modem too. It has an Ethernet connector. Looks like a phone jack but slightly larger. You connect an Ethernet patch cable from that to the Internet or WAN port of your wireless router. I like my D-Link DiR-655 wireless router. It costs about $90 at Amazon.com You disconnect the power plug from the back of the “modem” for 5-10 seconds. Leave the router plugged in to power and connected to the “modem” when you do this. Next plug the power back in and wait to see that the lights on the “modem” and the router all go to green or blue or whatever their “happy” color is.
