The solid state sensor used in the Pocket Air Check portable gas leak detector can detect the presence of combustible gas in atmosphere as low as 300 ppm (propane), 500 ppm (methane). However, because it is a leak detector – and NOT a gas analyzer or gas monitor – you would not want the unit calibrated to go into alarm at that low of a level, or else, the alarm would go off in an inspection area before you actually located the leak. This is why the Pocket Air Check is calibrated to go into alarm when it detects 5000 ppm, which is well below the LEL (Lower Explosive Limit) for most combustible gases such as natural gas, methane or propane.
