Please explain the advantages and disadvantages between plain-iron, slow-release iron and iron with ascorbic acid?
Plain iron is the cheapest of the three different iron preparations. It must be taken between meals or on an empty stomach, and therefore may cause heartburn, nausea and upper abdominal discomfort. Slow-release iron pills minimize the discomfort associated with plain iron, and while maximum absorbtion will occur if taken on an empty stomach, it may also be eaten with meals. Ascorbic acid helps to increase absorbtion of iron, but it is more expensive, and may also cause additional upper abdominal discomfort. Doctors advise against taking this preparation with meals.
