The character in the song never had a connection with his dad when he was a child. He was always far too busy with work. He promised himself that he would always be there for his own son. It then turned out that he was too busy at work to spend time with him and then the son in turn was too busy with work to spend time with his father. I think the moral is, Family first and then work. This is a cover version which was originally sung by Harry Chapin, which I have on vinyl in the loft. Oh the good old days.
