Being on a ventilator does NOT always mean the respiratory center is not working. We all intubate patients every day for various other reasons like being unable to protect their airways or they are tiring out (respiratory rates are too high, muscles are getting tired) One way to know if it is the reparatory center is the reason why that person is on the ventilator (the people who we classify as the “won’t breathe” kind) is actually to fix as much of the problem as possible while the person is on the ventilator then try to wean them off from it.
