Some say that war is good for stimulating the economy, often citing world war 2. However, it wasn’t really the war that brought so much prosperity in the 50’s, but rather the peace dividend following the war. Let me explain: A couple hundred years ago lived a frenchman by the name of Bastiat, who came up with what is now known as the Broken Window Fallacy. He told a parable about a boy playing with a ball outside of a bakery. The boy accidentally threw the ball through the baker’s window, shattering it. A crowd gathered, attempting to console the baker for the loss of his window, “Look at the bright side,” said a member of the crowd, “this will provide employment for the window maker, so at least economic activity is generated.” The crowd was wrong, though, because they didn’t consider that the baker had only so much money, and he was planning on buying a new suit from the tailor.
