People, try to imagine what America would be like *without* a free press to tell us when the government messes up?
The press is an imperfect instrument run by imperfect people, but the press is also a more important guarantor of our liberties than the people we have in uniform. Why? Because our liberties are more likely to be threatened by domestic forces than by foreign ones. As one who has been occasionally maligned and attacked by the media, I have not lost sight of how important that institution is. Even Karl Marx said that the press was necessary to keep the government in line. That was something Lenin decided to dispense with.
