Passport SR1 radar detector?
If a police officer pulls you over, you have a chance to talk your way out of a ticket. However, if he or she sees a radar detector, the ticket is as good as written. Therefore, it makes sense to hide the detector from the officer, if possible, as you’ll still have a chance to escape the ticket before it is written. Given the constraints on a discrete mounting, remote units are nearly forced to go behind the grill and the rear license plate frame. It sounds to me that the aiming advice that the trooper gave you is wrong. My guess is that most of the laser light will come back to the officer via reflective objects, and these would be the license plates, safety reflectors, and perhaps the headlight mirrors. There is no doubt that putting an infrared filter on top of the reflective surfaces will do a lot to reduce your ability to be seen by police laser.
