Yes – it was done. Cars with ‘painted’ superstructure were done after the car was completely assembled – the body or fender color was painted right over the black on the chassis. Funny thing is – this resulted in the underside of the differential and frame being body color and the top being black. Same for engine splash pans. Nobody does it this way when restoring, though.
