Pack Square FAQ Petition ~ Background ~ The vision?
Proposed GPI Building based on City Council documents A group of local citizens has created this “Frequently Asked Questions” (FAQ) page regarding the Grove Park Inn’s proposal to build a high-rise building on a half-acre portion of Pack Square. MAIN is assisting in the publication of this FAQ based on a provision in our mission statement to “Promote civic involvement and democratic dialogue.” In our judgement, the manner in which the Grove Park Inn proposal came before the Asheville City Council undermines public confidence in representative government. The City Council voted 6-1 to adopt the Option on Sept. 16th. The final vote to sell the property will come sometime within the next year. We do not support or oppose the GPI proposal; however, we do oppose the City Council’s failure to issue a public “request for proposals” (RFP) and to embark on a public process by which competing proposals may be judged and debated.
