Outreach and Community Services Does First Unitarian take official stands on social, economic and political issues of the day?
The congregation has taken specific stands on issues of the day from time to time in the past. However, that is not the main modus operandi of our Social Justice program. Ordinarily, our congregation selects a few issues or projects to concentrate on for the next couple of years, through a systematic procedure involving congregational education and decision-making. Then teams of interested members work intensively on those projects, keeping the rest of the congregation informed and enlisting their aid for specific kinds of support (e.g., collection of funds and household items for refugee families). Current and recent projects include work in the areas of cultural diversity, food security, domestic violence, Amnesty International, the environment, queer concerns, and homelessness.
