Our avocado trees have produced several fruit this year that appear to be the right size to eat but are hard as a rock. When is the best time to pick them?
Avocado fruit do not ripen on the tree even though they may be mature and ready to harvest. they soften after they fall to the ground or you pick them and let them ripen in the home. If you know the variety, then you can look up the general ripening period using guides available from your local University of Florida Extension office. Because your fruit appear to be the right size, harvest one or two and allow them to soften in the home for a few days; then taste them. If the flavor is good, your fruit is ripe for picking. If not, wait a few weeks and try again. Usually the fruit can be harvested over a period of a month or two once they begin to ripen. Mark the month of ripening on your calendar so you can harvest the fruit on time in the future.
