The answere is yes there can be differences. The most common difference is speed. Some cards are definately faster than others, and the manufacutres of the faster ones usually brag about their speed, while the slower ones don’t mention it. The faster ones are usually later generations that use the same format. The second difference is that some cards have programing in them that makes them different, like some SmartMedia cards. Some support camera and computer program features that others do not support. That is not true with all formats, but it does account for some of the differences in price. A real good computer geek can reprogram cards to support the added features, but most people are better off not even trying.
