Panama is considered one of the safest countries in Latin America with low crime rates and stiff penalties for criminals. Just like any country however, (including your own) there are certain problem areas that should be avoided, and as anywhere in the world, common sense should be used when visiting unfamiliar areas. Historically speaking, Panama is also free of incidents of civil wars and has experienced much less of the political and social instability that has affected many of the other countries in the region.
