Open Question: The question to English native speaker. How must I pronounce word “lives” in this rhyme by Ogden Nash?
I am learning English. I think the word “lives” don’t rhymes with “beeves”. Must I pronounce it [laivz] or [livz] (for saving of a rhyme). And St.Ives – [ivz] or [aivz]? Please help me! This is the poem: Ogden Nash The Bargain As I was going to St.Ives I met a man with seven lives; Seven lives, In seven sacks, Like seven beeves On seven racks. These seven lives He offered to sell, But which was best he couldn’t tell. He swore with any I’d be happy forever; I bought all seven And thought I was clever, But his parting words I can’t forget: Forever Isn’t over yet. Please explain your answer. Thank you in advance!
